West Ham have made an official approach for Shaun Wright-Phillips, Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has confirmed.
The Hammers have money to spend after the recent takeover by Icelandic biscuit baron Eggert Magnusson and are thought to be ready to offer a club record £10 million.
Kenyon said today that while Chelsea were not looking to sell any players, they would consider any serious offers.
"There has been interest from West Ham and they have officially approached us," he said.
Chelsea paid £23 million to prise Wright-Phillips away from Manchester City in July 2005, but he has only started 12 league games for the Blues.
His lack of football was cited by Sven-Goran Eriksson in the summer when he left the 25-year-old out of his World Cup squad.
West Ham boss Alan Pardew is keen to bring in a right-sided midfield player and is a long-time admirer of Wright-Phillips.
He is apparently willing to top the £7.5 million West Ham paid Norwich for Dean Ashton in January.
With Magnusson's money in his pocket, Pardew hopes to strengthen his squad during the transfer window after a poor start to the season.
West Ham play Sheffield United at home tomorrow looking for a positive start under their new owners.
Anton Ferdinand should play despite the distraction of his appearance in court today to answer assault charges.
