Celtic maintained their Champions League ambitions with a dogged 1-0 win over Portuguese side Benfica at Parkhead.
Aiden McGeady's deflected shot on the stroke of half time proved the difference between the two sides after an early onslaught from the visitors had seen Oscar Cardozo unfortunate not to hand them the lead.
The result leaves the Scottish champions in third place in group D with six points and matches at home to Shakhtar Donetsk and away to AC Milan to decide their fate.
In the group's other match the Rossoneri took a big step towards the knockout stages after a Filippo Inzaghi brace and a strike from Kaka produced a 3-0 win away to their Ukrainian opponents.
Alongside Liverpool in group A, Porto moved top of the table with a 2-1 win over Marseilles with Tarik Sektioui and Lisandro Lopez scoring the goals.
Chelsea's group B rivals Rosenborg upset Spanish side Valencia with a 2-0 win at the Mestalla.
Former Tottenham striker Steffen Iversen scored twice to give the visitors a surprise win and keep Valencia pinned to the bottom of the group.
Real Madrid have maintained their grip on group C after coming away from Athens with a point from a 0-0 draw against Olympiakos.
While in a stormy encounter at the Stadio Olimpico a double from Tommaso Rocchi handed Lazio a 2-1 win over Werder Bremen.
Both sides finished with ten men as Emilson Cribari was dismissed for the hosts before the Germans' goalscorer Diego was given his marching orders in stoppage time.
