Ricardo Carvalho has signed a new five-year contract at Chelsea on the eve of the FA Cup final.
The Portuguese defender, who will miss the showpiece occasion with Manchester United at the new Wembley through injury, is contracted with the Blues until 2012.
Carvalho celebrated his 29th birthday with the new deal having been one of the outstanding performers for Jose Mourinho's side this season.
Chelsea's chief executive Peter Kenyon said the club were thrilled to secure the future of one of their star players.
"We are delighted that Riccy has committed himself to us for the next five years, Kenyon said.
"He has been a key player for us since he joined and has been in fantastic form this season. Without doubt he is one of the best central defenders in the world.
"The only shame is that he will miss tomorrow's game through injury and we are all sorry for that."
Carvalho has marshalled the Blues defence this season due to the long-term injury to skipper John Terry.
The centre-back has made a staggering 50 appearances but has not played since injuring his knee in the 2-2 draw with Bolton last month.
Carvalho was signed by Mourinho for £19.8 million from his former club FC Porto in 2004.
