Carlisle escaped relegation from League One with a fantastic win over Millwall, which condemned Northampton to the drop.
The Blues were two points behind Northampton heading into the final game of the season and a huge task of trying to beat play-off bound Millwall in order to give themselves a chance of staying up.
But goals from veteran midfielder James Kavanagh and Paul Thirlwell gave Carlisle a 2-0 win and Northampton's 3-0 defeat to Leeds saw them drop out of League One.
Champions Leicester sent Crewe crashing to relegation with a 3-0 win. Bruno Berner, Lloyd Dyer and Matt Fryatt grabbed the goals for Leicester.
In probably the biggest game of the day in League One, Scunthorpe faced Tranmere Rovers, with the winner going into the play-offs.
It looked like it would be Tranmere who would take the play-off place as they took the lead through Craig Curran. But Scunthorpe grabbed a dramatic equaliser through Cliff Byrne to steal the play-off place.
