John Terry will not reclaim the England captaincy while Fabio Capello is at the helm, the Italian has confirmed.
The defender was stripped of the armband after allegations that he had an affair with the former girlfriend of his ex-Chelsea teammate Wayne Bridge.
"Until the World Cup, Terry will not be the captain again," Capello confirmed on Sunday. "After the World Cup? If I remain as England manager? I think not," said Capello.
"I ask the captain to set an example for young people. What he did was not good. I told him this, he understood."
Bridge has since ruled himself out of international duty, believing the allegations about Terry and Vanessa Perroncel, the mother of Bridge's son, make his position in the England squad "divisive and potentially untenable".
Capello confirmed Bridge would have been included in the squad for England's upcoming friendly with Egypt had the Manchester City full-back not withdrawn himself from selection.
"I took the decision only [to strip Terry of the captaincy] because of what happened with Wayne Bridge, nothing else," Capello explained
"I didn't ever consider taking John Terry out of the squad, just as I didn't decide to take Wayne Bridge out. And I don't believe the other players will have lost respect for him because they know his leadership qualities."
