England suffered another defensive blow ahead of their game against Germany on Wednesday night as Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell was this evening ruled out through injury.
The experienced defender had received his first call-up to the England squad since the World Cup in Germany last year but he missed his club's last two games and has failed to recover from a groin injury.
Campbell's unavailability is another blow to England manager Steve McClaren, who is already without the injured trio of Michael Dawson, Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate.
McClaren will also have to do without Liverpool star Jamie Carragher, who he failed to talk out of retirement earlier this week.
Newcastle youngster Steven Taylor is now expected to be drafted in to the senior squad from the under-21 team.
"Steven [Taylor] has been playing very well for Newcastle and was outstanding during the Under-21s tournament in Holland," said McClaren.
"He was with us for the B game against Albania at the end of last season and I was hugely impressed with his attitude and ability."
