Child protection campaigner Sara Payne has been left paralysed down the left side of her body after suffering a stroke brought on by a brain aneurysm.
The mother of murdered schoolgirl Sarah Payne was informed she had a 50-50 chance of survival after being admitted to hospital just before Christmas.
The 40-year-old underwent two brain operations in 36 hours and has now said she faces a "long road" to recovery.
"I've got to take it slowly and be patient," she told the News of the World.
"The doctors have faith in me and know I'm a fighter. But I'm under no illusion - I've months of tough physio to get through and there's a long road ahead.
"Rehab is the key to my getting better, to my getting home and getting home is my top priority."
After her eight-year-old daughter Sarah was murdered by paedophile Roy Whiting in 2000, Mrs Payne has become an active campaigner for child protection and gives parents the right to know if a registered sex offender lives in their area.
Sarah's Law, a limited form of the US legislation Megan's Law, named after murder victim Megan Kanka, was announced in the UK in February 2008.
An MBE, Mrs Payne took up the Government-appointed post of Victims' Champion in January 2009.
