A sensational last lap of qualifying from Jenson Button saw the Brawn driver grab pole for the Spanish grand prix.
Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel looked on course for pole, but Button came out with only two seconds left of qualifying and went on to break Kimi Raikkonen's lap record with a time of one minute 20.527 seconds.
Rubens Barrichello had led qualifying for a long spell with a time of one minute 20.762 seconds, but he was pushed back on successive laps by first Vettel and then his Brawn team-mate Button and the Brazilian will now start from third on the grid.
Ferrari driver Felipe Massa will start in fourth while his team-mate and 2007 world champion Raikkonen could only manage 16th place.
Red Bull continue to go form strength to strength as Vettel's team-mate Mark Webber did well to qualify in fifth position.
Toyota had a solid qualifying as their drivers Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli finished sixth and seventh respectively. While local hero and former world champion Fernando Alonso will start from eighth position on the grid.
Current world champion Lewis Hamilton continues to struggle in his McLaren and his chances of retaining his crown look to be fading fast as he will start the race tomorrow from 14th on the grid.
