Jenson Button drove the race of his life at Interlagos yesterday to clinch the 2009 drivers' world championship with one race to spare and he said that the title was unexpected.
The Briton dominated the first half of the season, winning six of the first seven races and there was even speak of him securing the title as early as the Hungarian grand prix.
However, his championship charge was derailed when the Brawn GP team were struck by grip issues in the cooler climbs of Europe with Button struggling to finish in the points and the Briton says he never expected to become world champion
"After the last few races I've had, this one makes up for it," said Button.
"It was such an awesome race and I'm world champion!
"21 years ago I jumped in a kart and this is everything I aimed for.
"I love winning and I never expected to be world champion because you think racing drivers in formula one are different to you, but we did it today."
Yesterday's result also means that Brawn GP are the 2009 constuctors' champions and team principle Ross Brawn dedicated the title to those who were made redundant from the team earlier in the year.
"It has still got to sink in and it is going to take a while," said Brawn.
"It's special, very special.
"The work team back in Brackley did over the winter was sensational and I have to say that all the people who can't be with us because we had to resize the team, my thanks goes out to them.
"I hope they've enjoyed what they've achieved because they've been part of what we've done."
Brawn went on to praise Button who he says thoroughly deserves the championship title.
"Jenson is a fantastic racer and today he had a great race, he knew what he had to do," said Brawn.
"We've lost a little bit of pace on the car compared to our competitors in the last few races, but he stuck with it and he deserves it."
