The FTSE 100 has managed to sustain gains that saw it hit a 14-month high earlier.
The share index closed at 5,382.67, up 86.29 points (1.63 per cent).
Driving the gains were mining and energy stocks, with Lonmin (9.3 per cent), Xstrata (7.79 per cent), Antofagasta (7.6 per cent) and Rio Tinto (5.49 per cent) all leading the way.
Royal Dutch Shell enjoyed a rise of 4.87 per cent.
But banking stocks fared less well, with Lloyds Banking Group dipping 2.54 per cent and Barclays slipping 1.15 per cent.
As British Airways staff are balloted by Unite the union over potential strike action, the carrier saw its shares fall by 0.78 per cent.
