Britain's top share index was down 0.58 per cent at 08:50 GMT, despite breaking a four-day losing run on Monday evening.

The FTSE 100 was down 31.12 points this morning, but finished up 104.09 points, or two per cent, last night; the biggest one day rise for over six weeks.

An announcement from Lloyds Banking Group that it will sell shares at 37p in the UK's biggest rights issue saw the bank up 1.61 per cent, or 92.94 points, in early trading.

Vedanta Resources added 104 points, while Anglo American and Rio Tinto added 95 and 65.5 points respectively.

With energy stocks in demand as crude prices benefited from the weaker dollar Royal Dutch Shell was up 1.18 per cent this morning.
