Britain's leading share index the FTSE 100 opened slightly higher on Wednesday morning, adding 0.16 per cent by 09:40 GMT.

The FTSE 100 added 8.81 points taking it to 5,611.11 after closing down 0.1 per cent on Tuesday.

Barclays dipped on the back of speculation of a US acquisition, shedding 0.58 per cent. But the biggest faller on the shares index was British American Tobacco, which lost 3.86 per cent, after it began trading without the right to the latest dividend.

ICAP led the gainers in early trade, adding 5.08 per cent, while both Royal Bank of Scotland Group and Lloyds Banking Group added 3.26 per cent and 2.43 per cent respectively.

British Airways (BA), which will later resume talks with the Unite union over threatened cabin crew strikes, was an early riser adding 1.75 per cent this morning.
