The FTSE 100 was up over one per cent in early trading on Friday.

At 08:52 BST, the FTSE 100 was up 1.02 per cent to 5,260.25 - a rise of 52.89 points - putting the index back at the levels it started the week at.

The Dow Jones was up 1.33 per cent last night on a series of profit reports beating expectations, despite poor employment data coming in.

In London, Vedanta Resources led the gains - up 3.11 per cent - as the miners advanced.

Prudential rose 2.99 per cent, bouncing back from falls yesterday, while Carnival gained 2.96 per cent.

Kazakhmys climbed 2.80 per cent.

BT Group was down 0.72 per cent - after some profit taking took place after yesterday's gains.

GlaxoSmithKline was down 0.64 per cent and Bunzl fell 0.60 per cent.

In Asia overnight, the Hang Seng gained 1.71 per cent and the Nikkei gained 0.15 per cent.

The Dax was up 1.25 per cent in early trading in Frankfurt, and the Cac 40 climbed 1.34 per cent in Paris.
