Four people are being treated in hospital following an explosion at a GlaxoSmithKline factory in Strathclyde, police have confirmed.
A blast ripped through one of the buildings at the pharmaceutical giant's ingredients plant in Shewalton Road, Irvine, shortly before 07:00 GMT.
Strathclyde police said that the explosion caused "considerable damage" to the building and confirmed that four people had been taken by ambulance to Crosshouse hospital, Kilmarnock, for treatment.
Two men, aged 51 and 45, are currently being treated at the hospital for burns, while a further two men are being treated for shock. The injured parties were all employees at the factory.
Police have pledged to carry out a full investigation to determine the cause of the explosion.
GlaxoSmithKline has confirmed the explosion but has not yet commented on the possible impact of the incident on production at the factory.
The pharmaceutical firm manufactures active ingredients for two medicines at the Irvine plant.
Shares in the world's largest pharmaceutical group appear unaffected by the explosion, with prices up 13p to 1481p on midday trading.
