The bookshop chain Borders has stopped taking orders on its website fuelling fears it could be placed into administration in the near future.
The troubled book retailer is believed to have held a series of rescue talks in the last few days as it attempts to find a buyer to secure its future.
The firm has said while its website has stopped taking new orders, existing orders will be fulfilled although they may be delayed.
Those attempting to purchase new titles on the Borders' website will receive the following message: "Sorry, that title can not be purchased".
The BBC reports that some publishers have already begun severing links with the retailer.
It is believed WHSmith walked away from a takeover deal to secure the retailer's future last Friday.
The chain, sold to the private equity firm Valco earlier this year, has suffered from increased competition from online retailers and supermarkets.
