Business leaders have been encouraged to seriously think about offering more paid internships following the launch of a scheme to pair employers with schools.
HR Magazine published an article examining the positives behind providing work experience to young people after the Visit Our Schools and Colleges project was announced.
Running from October 18th to 22nd, the scheme will attempt to forge links between businesses and education providers, giving youths a path into work through the chance to experience life in the employment market.
According to the magazine, ten per cent of 2009 graduates are still without a job and HR experts believe that now is the time to launch such an initiative.
The National Council for Work Experience (NCWE) recently polled 1,165 students, with eight per cent saying they were not aware of any internships in their own region.
"Graduates desperately need work experience to make them a better prospect for employers," NCWE director Heather Collier explained.
