A late John Terry header gave Chelsea a scrappy 2-1 over Burnley to go four points clear at the top of Premier League.
Chelsea controlled the game throughout without playing particularly well and as a result had to rely on their influential captain to grab all three points at Turf Moor.
The England captain rose in the Burnley area, following a corner on the 83rd minute, to head past the Burnley keeper and spoil new manager Brian Laws' debut home match, after Steven Fletcher had cancelled out Nicolas Anelka's first half strike.
Chelsea bossed the first half without creating too many clear cut opportunities, one of which fell to Lampard.
Anelka found himself some room down the left and after driving into the area the striker cut the ball back to the waiting Lampard who fired over the bar from just inside the area.
Chelsea took the lead half way through the half through Anelka after a swift counter attack.
Goalkeeper Petr Cech threw the ball out to the unguarded Joe Cole who ran up field. The midfielder then floated a pass to Malouda who knocked the ball across the box to the unmarked Anelka waiting in the penalty area, who couldn't miss.
Burnley struggled to put three passes together and the extent of their threat in the first half was summed up by a wild shot by Andre Bikey from just outside the area that sailed into the top tier of the stand.
But out of the blue, against all expectations the home side grabbed an equaliser at the start of the second half.
The ball was flicked over the top to Steven Fletcher who in turn flicked the ball over the head of Alex to find himself in the penalty area. Alex came back at the attacker, but Fletcher held him off and fired under Cech to the delight of the home fans.
Chelsea still looked threatening when they came forward. Malouda blasted wide and several good crossing positions were wasted.
Soon a Lampard free kick gave cause for concern to 'The Beast' Brian Jensen as he dove low to his right to keep out the powerful set piece.
Then substitute Daniel Sturridge showed good skill to free himself of the defender to get to the by-line and cross, which was diverted for a corner by Jensen.
The resulting kick found the head of Terry who powered his header forcefully towards goal and despite the best efforts of Jensen, win the game for Chelsea.
