Williams was forced to retire hurt in the semi-final
Serena Williams was forced to pull out of the Stanford Classic midway through her semi-final with Aleksandra Wozniak because of a knee problem.

The number one seed had been trailing 6-2 3-1 when she decided to retire from the match early.

Wozniak said she had noticed that Serena was experiencing difficulties throughout the first set but tried to focus on her own game.

The Canadian secured two breaks of serve in the first set and when she made another breakthrough in the second set Williams decided she had had enough.

The Wimbledon runner-up said the injury had only come to her attention on the morning of the semi-final but gradually worsened the more she played.

Williams said: It was hurting in practice and I didn't really practice for too long because of it. It didn't bother me until this morning, and during the match it was getting worse.

"After I got off the court it was really swollen. I'm not sure how long it'll take to heal. I've been playing a lot of tennis since Miami, especially for me, and these hardcourts can be tough on the body."

Williams is due to represent America at the Olympics but is confident the injury will not stop her competing in Beijing.

She said: "My main goal now is being at the Olympics. I hope to stay healthy. I don't have any plans of not going to Beijing."

Wozniak will face Marion Bartoli, who defeated Briton Anne Keothavong earlier in the competition, in the final.

Bartoli defeated Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-3 6-3 in the other semi-final.End of story
