Steve Bruce has been announced as the new manager of Sunderland.
The 48-year-old has left Wigan and signed a three-year deal to become the new Black Cats manager, following the resignation of Ricky Sbragia at the end of last season.
A statement on the Sunderland website said Bruce had signed a contract until 2012 and would be unveiled to the media later this evening.
Commenting on the appointment, club chairman Niall Quinn said: "Steve will bring a professionalism and strength of character to this club that will really help to bring us forward to where we want to be.
"He knows more than anyone what football means to people in the region and I'm confident that he will be able to instil into our players exactly what it means to play fro this football club."
Prior to his stint in charge at Wigan, Bruce was boss at Sheffield United, Huddersfield, Crystal Palace and Birmingham City.
He will be joined at Sunderland by coaching staff Eric Black, Nigel Spink, and Keith Bertschin.
