The Hollywood actress Brittany Murphy has died of a cardiac arrest at the age of 32, her publicist has confirmed.
According to TMZ.com emergency services were called to the home of the actress's husband in Los Angeles at 08:00 local time.
The 8 Mile actress was reported to have been taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but was declared dead on arrival.
Simon Monjack, her husband, is believed to have been the one to have called an ambulanc, after Murphy was reportedly found unconscious in the shower.
A family statement said the "loss of our beloved Brittany is a terrible tragedy. She was our daughter, our wife, our love and a shining star."
It added: "We ask you to respect our privacy at this time."
Murphy's father, Angelo Bertolotti, said his daughter was "just an absolute doll since she was born".
"Her personality was always outward. Everybody loved her - people that made movies with her, people on a cruise - they all loved her," he remarked.
Following the news, the actress's co-star on the movie Just Married and ex-boyfriend Ashton Kutcher tweeted: "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon.
"See you on the other side kid."
The cause of Murphy's death has not yet been determined and the Los Angeles county coroner's office is to hold an autopsy "as soon as possible".
However, coroner's Captain John Kapt told People.com: "Foul play is not suspected at this time because there were no outward signs of trauma or other injuries."
