Championship leader Lewis Hamilton was the quickest in the second practise session for the Canadian grand prix in Montreal.
The McLaren driver clocked one minute and 15.752 seconds to beat BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica and world champion Kimi Raikkonen.
It marked a massive improvement for Briton Hamilton, after he finished in sixth place in the first practise session.
Ferrari's Felipe Massa was the quickest in the first free practise, after setting a blistering lap of one minute 17.553 seconds in wet conditions.
BMW Sauber's Kubica was 0.256 seconds slower in second place, while McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen was third fastest with Ferrari's
Raikkonen was back in fifth.
Several drivers span off at the at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve including Honda's Jenson Button, Toyota's Jarno Trulli and Renault duo Fernando Alonso, and Nelson Piquet.
While the drivers struggled with their breaking in the opening stages, the last 15 minutes of the first practise session was riveting.
Raikkonen set the first dry tyres benchmark of one minute and 20.904 seconds, which the Finn then improved to one minute and 18.292 seconds.
But Raikkonen plummeted back to fifth when Massa, Kovalainen and the BMWs produced their fastest laps in the closing stages.
Massa clocked his best time on the final of his 14 laps while rival Hamilton did just eight laps, the fewest of all the drivers.
Meanwhile, Mark Webber and David Coulthard were seventh and eighth for Red Bull ahead of Williams' Kazuki Nakajima and Renault's Fernando Alonso.
