A British soldier has been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.
The soldier from 1st Battalion the Coldstream Guards was killed by an explosion near to Camp Bastion in central Helmand province on Thursday morning.
Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, said in a statement: "It is my sad duty to confirm the death of a soldier from the 1st Battalion, The Coldstream Guards here in Helmand Province this morning.
"He was one of us, one of our own, and we will remember him."
The soldier's next of kin have been informed.
Since operations began in Afghanistan eight years ago, 221 British service personnel have been killed.
