The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed a British soldier from Third Battalion The Rifles was killed on Saturday after a suicide car bombing in southern Afghanistan.
The incident occurred around one kilometre east of Sangin, in Helmand province, the MoD said, as the soldier was on patrol. His next of kin have since been informed of his death.
Lt Col David Wakefield of Task Force Helmand, praised the soldier's "indefatigable courage".
The soldier, the 276th British military fatality since operations in Afghanistan began in 2001, had been providing protection for colleagues who had deactivated an unexploded bomb.
Lt Col Wakefield added: "He was part of a patrol to deal with an unexploded insurgent bomb, an operation to protect and save lives.
"We have lost another of our comrades, whose indefatigable courage in the face of danger day after day will not be forgotten."
The soldier's death was not related to Operation Moshtarak.
