British stars Kate Winslet and Imelda Staunton have both been nominated for the best actress award ahead of Sunday's Golden Globe ceremony.
Winslet has been recognised for her role in the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, while Staunton has been nominated for her portrayl of a back street abortionist in the film Vera Drake.
Last year, British comic Ricky Gervais became the toast of Hollywood when he scooped two Golden Globe awards for his cult comedy show, The Office.
Other hopefuls at this year's award ceremony include Jamie Foxx, who is competing for three separate acting awards. The star has been nominated for best actor for his role in the film biopic Ray, best supporting actor for Collateral and best TV actor for the one-off film Redemption.
Johnny Depp has also been nominated as best actor for his role in Finding Neverland, as has Leonardo DiCaprio for The Aviator.
In the best actress category, Nicole Kidman has been nominated for her role in the film Birth. She competes against Hilary Swank for her role in Million Dollar Baby, Uma Thurman for Kill Bill 2 and Scarlett Johansson for A Love Song for Bobby Long.
The quirky comedy Sideways is set to dominate nominations at this year's awards. The tale of two guys searching for love in California's wine country has been nominated in seven categories, including best musical/comedy.
Meanwhile, in the television genre, the new show Desperate Housewives is among the shows being tipped to walk away from the ceremony with a host of trophies.
Awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes are seen as a tantalising taster of which films are likely to scoop all the prizes at the prestigious Oscars ceremony.
