A four-year-old British girl has been killed in Florida when she was hit by a car on Daytona Beach.
The Foreign Office confirmed the death of the girl, but would not issue her name, which has been reported in local press as Ellie Bland from Nottingham.
It is believed she was walking along the beach with her great-uncle when she was hit by the car - which are permitted on the stretch of the beach she was on.
A Foreign Office spokeswoman told inthenews.co.uk: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Florida on Saturday.
"The next of kin have been informed and we are providing them with assistance."
She added that they could not confirm the name of the child because she was a minor.
The Daytona Beach News Journal reported that charges over the incident are pending, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, but that the vehicle involved was not believed to have been speeding.
The newspaper's report quoted Captain Rich Gardner - who had been on beach patrol for 26 years - as saying the incident was "the hardest thing I've ever had to look at".
