Lee Westwood has reignited his chances of winning the European Order of Merit with a fabulous display at the Volvo Masters today.
The Englishman had to play 11 holes of his second round after play was suspended yesterday due to rain and Westwood was in blistering form early this morning as he finished the 11 holes with a score of six-under-par.
Westwood and most of the other players were only allowed to play a few holes on the front nine of the third round as rain again meant play had to be suspended. But Westwood still managed to gain some momentum as he picked up as shot in the six holes he played to finish in third place.
He ended the day on four-under-par and is only a shot behind leaders Sergio Garcia and Soren Kjeldsen. If Westwood wins the tournament then current Order of Merit leader Robert Karlsson will have to be at least third to be crowned Europe's number one player, but the Swede is in 28th place on five-over at the Volvo Masters.
"After seven holes this morning it wasn't looking good," said Westwood. "But I'm hitting the ball really well now.
"This afternoon I hit every fairway, I've split the fairway again on the seventh before we came in. I'm playing really solidly and I'm now only a stroke behind.
"I've given myself a great chance of winning this tournament and whatever might come with it, whether we play three rounds or four."
Padraig Harrington is still in with a shout of retaining the Order of Merit as he is in 18th place on two-over. Harrington would win the Order of Merit if he finishes in the top two places and Westwood and Karlsson fail to win the tournament.
