Chelsea left-back Wayne Bridge has moved to calm speculation on his future by signing a new deal to stay with the Premiership champions for another four years.

The former Southampton defender had seemed destined for a move away from Stamford Bridge after Jose Mourinho's summer recruitment of England left-back Ashley Cole but a string of impressive performances have forced him back into contention.

"I feel like I'm playing well this term. I think I'll continue to get chances and so I'm delighted," the 26-year-old said.

With seven league appearances to his name already this season, Bridge seems to have recovered from an unhappy third term in West London that saw him shipped out to Fulham on loan in January.

A new contract comes as part of a happy week for Bridge as he was excused from the midweek Champions League trip to Werder Bremen to witness the birth of his daughter.
