AC Milan eventually beat a resolute Celtic defence to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League but needed an extra-time winner from Kaka to take the tie 1-0.
Bhoys stopper Artur Boruc was the busier of the two goalkeepers as Milan enjoyed the best of the chances, but some fine saves helped keep his side in it during the 90 minutes.
The Polish goalkeeper foiled Kaka early on while defender Lee Naylor helped with a goal-line clearance from Filippo Inzaghi.
Celtic were unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty when Paulo Maldini appeared to block Jiri Jarosik's shot with his hand, but the referee waived play on.
Kaka came increasingly into the game in the second half and saw his free-kick strike the crossbar from 18 yards out before the tie went into extra-time.
And it was the Brazilian's mazy run that decided the game - starting on the half-way line he beat three Celtic defenders and then slipped the ball through Boruc's legs to put his side into the quarter-finals.
They will be joined in the draw by Bayern Munich after they overcame Real Madrid on away goals after their tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.
Bayern's Roy McKaay opened the scoring - and in the process broke the record for the fastest-ever goal in the Champions League - breaching the Madrid defence just ten seconds into the game.
The Dutchman calmly slotted home past Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas after Hasan Salihamidzic pounced on a mistake by full-back Roberto Carlos and squared the ball to the unmarked striker.
Brazilian defender Lucio added a second mid-way through the first half before Real mounted a second-half comeback.
The Spanish side were awarded a penalty ten minutes from time which caused a fracas between the players. Bayern's Mark van Bommel and Real's Mahamadou Diarra were sent off as a result.
Ruud van Nistlerooy scored the penalty but Madrid were denied a dramatic winner when Sergio Ramos' strike was ruled out for offside, leaving the Germans to celebrate their progress in the competition.
