England head coach Martin Johnson has stood by under-fire lock Steve Borthwick, retaining him as captain for the upcoming Six Nations championship.
The lock forward has been criticised in the media in recent weeks for showing a lack of leadership with England and losing form for his club side.
But Johnson has confirmed the second row will continue to lead his side, beginning with their Six Nations opener against Wales at Twickenham on February 6th.
The squad are currently in Portugal on a pre-tournament training camp and are due to return to England on Friday.
After assessing the fitness of the players on the first day of the camp, cover has been called up for five players - Andrew Sheridan, Julian White, Tom Croft, Joe Worsley and Harry Ellis.
Front rows Matt Mullan (Worcester) and Dan Cole (Leicester), back-rowers Dan Ward-Smith (Wasps) and Chris Robshaw (Harlequins), and Leicester scrum-half Ben Youngs.
Stade Francais flanker James Haskell faces a scan on a knee injury he sustained over the weekend before it is known whether he will join the squad in camp.
