Struggling Middlesbrough will continue talks with the Football Association and the Premier League to resolve the future of Gareth Southgate as manager.
The 36-year-old's 12-week period in which he can manage without the Uefa Pro-licence expires on Saturday.
Southgate, whose side have won only two of their last nine league games, could have his position decided on Thursday when Boro chairman Steve Gibson meets with the other Premier League chairmen.
A new proposal will be discussed to allow a manager to continue in a job if he is studying to gain his full license.
Southgate, who was given a five-year contract in the summer, has yet to complete his Pro-license and has not enrolled on the A license course.
A Premier League spokesman confirmed: "We are in ongoing discussions about Gareth Southgate with Middlesbrough football club and the FA."
Previous managers who have been given special dispensation include Newcastle's Glenn Roeder and former Leeds boss Eddie Gray.
Southgate was allowed to take charge despite not completing the Pro-licence after the departure of Steve McClaren to manage England.
Boro face a crunch match with West Ham at the Riverside stadium on Saturday and could be forced to appoint a caretaker boss if Southgate is not given an extension by the FA and Premier League.
