Middlesbrough successfully negotiated their tricky FA Cup replay at the Hawthorns as they held their nerve in a penalty shoot-out against West Brom after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

The Baggies, currently riding high in second spot in the Championship, had looked set for a spot in the last eight against Manchester United after Darren Carter wrapped a shot around Brad Jones in the first half.

The visitors had looked badly out-of-sorts in the first period and manger Gareth Southgate reacted by throwing on promising youngster James Morrison.

The change seemed to have the desired effect and gradually the Premiership outfit asserted themselves on the contest.

Boro's equaliser arrived just after the hour as Australian striker Mark Viduka bundled home a low cross from Stuart Parnaby.

The game began to swing back towards the hosts in extra time but their dangerous momentum was slowed by a deserved red card for striker Nathan Ellington.

As the additional minutes slipped away both teams seemed happy to decide the match from 12 yards and they proved well matched in the penalty contest.

Neil Clement and Lee Dong-Gook each missed to leave the sides level at 4-4 before George Boateng scored and West Brom's Sherjill MacDonald skied his attempt to send Boro through.
