Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson wants his club to be competing for European trophies over the next five years.
Boro have enjoyed successful Uefa Cup campaigns in recent years and reached the final in 2006 before losing to Spanish side Sevilla.
The club also won the League Cup in 2004 and Gibson wants to add to that silverware in the coming seasons.
He said: "Over the next five years we want to win another cup and we want to be in Europe more often than not."
The chairman said he wanted to make the next ten years more successful than that last ten years on Teesside, adding he was happy with the start Gareth Southgate's men had made to this season.
"I'm not concerned with what other clubs do but right now we're in 12th place in the Premier League and that tells me we are competing," he said.
Gibson says there is currently a lot of talk about money in football but feels Boro's blueprint of bringing players through from its academy is working well.
He said: "We've spent £23 million on new players this summer. When I'm asked about the club everything seems to be about money, money, money. But we have so much else going for us, like the academy."
Attendances at the Riverside Stadium have been falling recently but Gibson feels that will change if performances on the field are consistently good, adding that Southgate must be given time and patience to build a capable side.
