A battling Bolton Wanderers side were unlucky to only draw 1-1 with Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of the Uefa Cup last-16 tie at the Reebok Stadium.
Bolton took the lead through midfielder Gavin McCann, who was the first to react to a Matt Taylor shot and he side-footed the ball home.
The home side were agonisingly close to doubling their lead at the start of the second half but Icelandic striker Heidar Helguson saw his powerful header crash off the Sporting bar.
With only 12 minutes left on the clock, Bolton looked to be heading for a famous win.
But Sporting drove forward in numbers and Simon Vukcevic first had an effort come off the bar, but then smashed home the equaliser to give his side a crucial away goal.
Rangers claimed an impressive 2-0 win over German side Werder Breman at Ibrox, but they were helped by mistakes from Bremen keeper Tim Wiese.
French striker Daniel Cousin, who was close to joining Fulham in January, saw his speculative 35-yard shot palmed into his own goal by Wiese.
And the Bremen keeper was also at fault for the second goal. Again, he failed to hold on to a shot from Cousin and this time Steven Davis was on hand to put the ball in.
It was a much better night for another German team as Bayern Munich won 5-0 away at Anderlecht.
Hamit Altintop, Luca Toni, Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose and substitute Franck Ribery all scored for Bayern.
