Cardiff stunned Sale with a 32-15 victory in the opening night of the EDF Energy Cup at Cardiff Arms Park.
The Blues drew first blood in the Anglo-Welsh tournament thanks to two tries from Gareth Thomas on his full debut.
Jason Rush, Xavier Spice, and Tom James also crossed the line to gain a bonus point for the hosts.
The Sharks, who trailed by a staggering 24 points at the break, touched down twice thanks to second-half tries from Lee Thomas and Rory Lamont.
Blues coach Dai Young hailed his side's explosive first-half display.
"It was a physical game and there are a lot of players in the dressing room with bumps and bruises," Young said.
"But it is lovely to get a win and is a good start for us.
"We played with a lot of flair and showed we have the players to finish it off."
Elsewhere, Saracens scored five tries to thump Leeds 46-28 at Headingley.
Rodd Penney bagged a brace while Craig McMullen, Edd Thrower, Mosese Rauluni and Kevin Sorrell also crossed the line.
The home side, who trailed 8-13 at the break, touched down four times through Erik Lund, Mike MacDonald, Scott Armstrong and Apolosi Satala.
