US tennis star James Blake unexpectedly exited the Indianapolis ATP hard-court tournament after falling to a 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 defeat to compatriot Sam Querrey at the quarter-final stage.
Blake, 27, looking to win his second Indianapolis title, was flummoxed by the 19-year-old's huge serving with the young Californian hitting 34 aces in total.
The world number 90, whose first ATP Tour semi-final came on the back of seven successive losses, said that he played to his maximum potential to beat the world number nine.
"It was one of those days when I was just in a zone serving and it definitely paid off there at the end," said Querrey.
"For me, beating a top ten player is more important than reaching the semi-finals," he added.
Querrey will next face the hard-hitting third seed Dmitry Tursunov for a place in the final and will be hoping to make amends for a defeat to the Russian-born player in Los Angeles last year.
This year's Queen's Club tournament winner and Wimbledon 2007 quarter-finalist Andy Roddick faces Canadian Frank Dancevic in the other semi-final.
