Dimitar Berbatov has revealed that he always believed he would end up at Manchester United, even when his protracted transfer from Tottenham seemed to have reached a stalemate.
The Bulgarian has also claimed that money was not the deciding factor in his £30.75 million transfer to Old Trafford, and that he could have earned more had he accepted Manchester City's late bid for the striker.
"The red shirt is a really, really big thing for me," the 27-year-old told MUTV. "The people around me, my really close friends know that I play to enjoy, to entertain the fans. I don’t play for the money. If I wanted to play for the money, I would accept Manchester City's offer or Chelsea's. I want to play for the biggest club in the world and that’s why I’m here.
"I always believed I would end up here. I was going through very difficult times but I always believed that things were going to happen and in the end they did. Now I'm the happiest guy in the world."
Berbatov also suggested that he would like to finish his career at Old Trafford having signed a four-year contract with the Premier League and Champions League holders.
"I’m 27 and now is my time. This is maybe the last step in my career. I’m at the biggest club in the world and here I can develop in the way I want, the way I always wanted. That’s the most important thing for me.
"I hope I can play my part and help United win more trophies because that's an important thing in football. And of course, I hope I’ll enjoy the football with the players we have here."
