Arsenal slumped to a 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light with Darren Bent scoring the winner for Sunderland 20 minutes from full-time.
The Gunners struggled to play with the lethal cutting edge they have displayed this season with Robin van Persie missing through the injury he picked up on international duty.
And Sunderland took advantage with Bent smashing in his ninth goal of the season after Arsenal had failed to clear a corner.
Arsene Wenger introduced Theo Walcott and Andrey Arshavin as Arsenal looked for an equaliser but Steve Bruce's team held on to secure victory and end the Gunners 13-match unbeaten run
Meanwhile, Lee Bowyer scored his fourth goal of the season to give Birmingham a 1-0 win over Fulham at St Andrews.
The only goal of the game came on the quarter hour mark when James McFadden picked out Bowyer who chipped the ball over the advancing Mark Schwarzer.
Fulham dominated possession in the second-half but they couldn't find a way past Birmingham's defence which soaked up considerable pressure to ensure victory for Alex McLeish's side.
