Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said he was delighted with his side's victory over current champions Manchester United at Anfield.
Goals from Fernando Torres and a late second in injury time from substitute David Ngog sealed the three points for the under-pressure Reds and Benitez admitted the win was important for the club to regain some momentum this season.
"It was a fantastic win for the club," said the Spaniard.
"We have been working really hard and I am very pleased, we have to keep the confidence and belief that we are a good team. The passion, attitude, character and the mentality was the difference."
The former Valencia boss said was pleased with the way his players responded from such a bad week on and off the pitch and insists he has a good team.
"The team is better than people think, the character and the quality that we have is good," he continued.
"We need to show this character in every game. The players have answered a lot of questions. I'm really pleased because the media are not reporting me but are reporting the team."
The game marked the return of striker Fernando Torres who missed out Liverpool's two previous outings against Sunderland last week and Lyon in the Champions League with a thigh injury.
His manager was happy with the performance of his striker but admitted playing him was "a gamble".
The Spanish forward explained how important the win was for Liverpool: "It's a massive win for us, we need to win to stay in the title race we have to keep going.
"We are playing as a team and working hard, we have to keep playing good and working together as a team."
