Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez hailed his sides performance after they beat Tottenham 2-0 at Anfield.
After a disappointing draw against Stoke Liverpool were looking to maintain their floundering league campaign, and took advantage of a lacklustre performance from Spurs - one of their main rivals in the race for the top four - moving to within one point of Harry Redknapp's side.
Dirk Kuyt got Liverpool off to the perfect start with an early goal and then sealed victory from the penalty spot in injury time after Sebastien Bassong had brought down David Ngog.
Speaking after the game, Benitez praised his sides performance but warned the competition for a top four finish has a long way to go.
"The key to the victory was character, I think, against a good side," said Benitez.
"We had three or four clear chances to score and when we needed to be we were strong in defence.
"We knew it was an important game before the match and we were determined to be professional, work hard and do our job.
"It is a long race for the top four places, though."
