Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham has received a largely negative reception from US television critics after a guest appearance on American Idol.
The 35-year-old appeared on the opening show of the ninth season as the first in a series of guest replacements for former judge Paula Abdul.
But the singer and businesswoman failed to win over US TV commentators with the Los Angeles Times saying the appearance of the one-time Posh Spice was "the night's saddest failure".
She provoked kind words from Billboard's Monica Herrera - who said Beckham added a "new dynamic" to the talent show - while Fox News commentator Jennifer D'Angelo Friedman said the mother-of-three "made a surprisingly sweet and likeable guest judge, once you got past wondering how a 35-year-old woman could have such skinny arms".
Most commentators were scathing in their criticism, however, with the Village Voice saying Beckham "had nothing to add to the commentary".
Writer Sharyn Jackson described Beckham's face as "too crazy for the close-up" and added: "I always thought a British accent made people sound smart but I guess I was wrong."
Time magazine blogger James Poniwozik commented: "On paper, Posh Spice - briefly famous for her music in the 90s, then famous for other things since then - is a Paula equivalent.
"But her main contribution was to anyone playing a drinking game based on the number of times she could use the adjective 'nice'."
The ninth season of American Idol was preceded by the news that Simon Cowell will leave the show at the end of the current run, in order to launch a US version of The X Factor.
