Bayern Munich scored a contentious late winner to give them a narrow lead after the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie against Fiorentina at the Allianz Arena.
Arjen Robben put Bayern into the lead on the stroke of half-time after a first half where the German side had created little.
And they conceded an equaliser shortly after the break when Per Kroldrup put the ball in from close range.
Fiorentina were forced to play the final 15 minutes with ten men after Massimo Gobbi was sent off and were unlucky to concede a late goal to Miroslav Klose, who appeared to be offside. The goal stood though and gives Bayern a slender lead to take to Italy for the second leg.
Mario Gomez forced the first save of the game when he picked up Daniel Van Buyten's ball from the back and hit a well struck shot towards the near post that was beaten away by Sebastien Frey.
Fiorentina looked the team more likely to open the score though with Cesare Natali heading Juan Manuel Vargas' free-kick wide after Alberto Gilardino had beaten the offfside trap, only the slip at the vital moment which allowed Bayern to clear the danger.
Frey was forced to make another fine save soon after when Franck Ribery cut in from the left and sent a low shot towards goal.
Fiorentina continued to look a threat on the attack though with 20-year-old Stevan Jovetic finding plenty of space behind Gilardino.
And Van Buyten had to make a vital block deny Gilardino as he latched onto Mario Bolatti's low cross from the right.
Bayern Munich were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half-time though when Ribery was knocked to the ground after a flowing move. Gomez put the ball in the net but the referee pulled the game back for a penalty which Robben dispatched to put the home side into the lead.
Despite taking the lead into half-time Bayern had looked vulnerable at the back and conceded an equaliser five minutes after the restart when they failed to clear a corner with the ball falling to Kroldup three yards out to poke past Hans-Jorg Butt.
Bayern reacted well as they looked to regain the lead and went close with Ribery firing a low a ball across the face of goal before Robben hit a vicious left-footed strike narrowly wide.
Louis van Gaal then made a double substitution, sending on strikers Ivica Olic and Klose who almost scored immediately with a header that was cleared off the line.
Fiorentina struggled to look as threatening as the game continued and were reduced to 10-men when Massimo Gobbi was shown a straight red-card for an apparent elbow on Robben, although replays showed it was harsh decision with the Dutch winger running into the back of the full-back.
Bayern dominated the closing stages and grabbed the winning goal when Klose headed in after Frey could only parry Robben's powerful shot.
Fiorentina were left feeling rightly aggrieved at the final whistle though as the German striker was clearly offside in the build-up to the winning goal.
