Australian star Trent Barrett will lead the Wigan Warriors in the absence of club captain Sean O'Loughlin.

O'Loughlin could be out for up to 12 weeks with a broken shoulder blade which he suffered in the win over Warrington last Friday.

Barrett has been one of Wigan's best players since he joined the club 18 months ago and 30-year-old former Australian Test player was named the Rugby League Players' Player of the Year last year.

"Trent will lead us, he is one of the leaders on the field and will take the team forward," said Wigan coach Brian Noble.

"There were a few candidates, we have some leaders amongst us but he was the obvious choice and he stands out as a leader.

"His narration skills, his vocals are very good and he is determined to finish the season very well."

The decision to name Barrett as captain came as a bit of a surprise to some as the stand-off is expected to leave the Warriors at the end of the season due to feeling homesick.

His departure looks even more likely now after Wigan today confirmed the signing of Canterbury Bulldogs star Cameron Phelps, who will join the club next season.
