Five-time major winner Seve Ballesteros had a successful third neurological operation to ease further swelling around his brain.

The 51-year-old went under the knife at La Paz hospital in Madrid after his condition, which had been described as "stable", deteriorated this week.

Today's surgery was performed to remove all remaining residual parts of the brain tumour that was taken out earlier this month.

In a statement, doctors said: "The targets planned have been achieved and have eliminated the oedema and the remnants of the tumour," said doctors.

"Mr Severiano Ballesteros has been subjected to a new surgery that ended at 1700 today with no complications occurring.

"The patient entered the operating room of the neurosurgery service at 0830 for the preparation and process anaesthetic and the intervention began at 1030.

"The patient is stable... and is currently under observation in the intensive care unit."

The Spanish golfer underwent emergency surgery to remove a brain tumour on October 14th after being taken into hospital after suffered dizziness and a brief loss of consciousness while at an airport in the Spanish capital.

And surgeons were forced to perform a second operation 48 hours later to remove a piece of Ballesteros' skull due to the swelling - known as a decompressive craniotomy.

He has since been recovering in hospital and was briefly held in the intensive care unit at La Paz last week.
