Bryan Robson has left West Bromwich Albion by mutual consent following an indifferent start to life back in the Championship.

Announcing the news, Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace thanked Robson for his 22 months in charge at the Hawthorns but said a change was needed to help revive the club's fortunes.

"After much deliberation, and in view of the results since early 2006, it has been decided that a change is necessary if the club is to achieve its aims for this season and beyond," he explained.

"This is a very important time for West Bromwich Albion. With promotion a priority, the board felt that given the club's current league position, the best way forward was to agree to make a change now."

West Brom had been one of the favourites for promotion following their relegation from the Premiership last season but they currently sit ninth in the league with just three wins from their first eight games.

Nigel Pearson has taken control of first-team affairs while the club considers all available options, a statement confirmed.

Robson, a former England captain, has now failed to deliver in three managerial stints, having unceremoniously left Middlesbrough in 2000 and then been sacked by Bradford after just 28 games in charge.

He had yesterday vowed not to quit the club despite the crowd chanting for him to leave during Saturday's dire 1-1 draw with Southend.
