Bolton boss Gary Megson admits his decision to rest players in midweek backfired after the 1-0 loss to ten-man Wigan.
Megson rested nine players in the Trotters' defeat to Sporting Lisbon in the Uefa Cup on Thursday.
The Bolton manager recalled the players today against the Latics, but they could not find a way past Steve Bruce's side.
Jason Koumas was harshly sent-off in the fifth minute but the home side still won thanks to Emile Heskey's strike.
Megson, whose side have lost their last four league games, slammed his players for their first-half display.
"There were a lot of harsh words said at half-time because that performance was not acceptable," Megson said.
"We've rested players midweek for this game and clearly it hasn't worked because we didn't turn up or start well.
"We looked lethargic and leggy and weren't good enough and we are right in the cart."
The win puts the Latics into 12th spot, six points away from the drop zone.
Bruce, whose side are unbeaten in their last four games, praised his side for their battling display with ten-men.
"There were some fantastic performances out there and in particular Emile Heskey's goal could prove to be vital for us," Bruce said.
"I've looked at [Koumas'] challenge and I don't think it is a red card. He's tried to win the ball, it's one footed and I think that because of the climate we are in, it is leaving the referees in a difficult position.
"I think if it hadn't been for the Eduardo tackle a couple of weeks ago then that would have been a yellow card."
