Wigan boss Paul Jewell has criticised the rules governing managers in football today and says that coaching badges cannot replace experience when it comes to management.
Jewell's Wigan side face Middlesbrough today and he feels that manager Gareth Southgate should be given a chance despite not having the necessary qualifications according to the rules.
The Latics' managers said: "Some of the most highly-qualified coaches in the world wouldn't make a manager for as long as they lived.
"I understand the rules. If you have to go on these courses and you have to have the badges, then you have to have them. Whether I agree is another matter because I learned more in my first week as a manager than I've ever done on any course."
Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson had earlier in the week described Southgate as naïve after comments he made about Cristiano Ronaldo but the Middlesbrough man believes he is slowly getting to grips with things.
"Now I can look back at some of the problems that we had in the first few weeks, and it has pleased me how we have dealt with them," said the Boro boss.
Despite hovering two points above the drop zone Southgate is determined not to be dragged into relegation talk. He stated that after just 16 games everyone at the club was remaining positive.
Jewell on the other hand is trying to calm his supporters down after their 2-0 win at West Ham on Wednesday and, despite being within four points of a top four place, he thinks that any talk of finishing there is "ridiculous".
