Paul Jewell has revealed the real reason why he left Wigan was the club's failure to sign top-class players.
Jewell left the Latics in the aftermath of their dramatic survival on the last day of the Premiership season after condemning Sheffield United to the drop.
It was believed the former Bradford boss left due to exhaustion and wanted a break from the game.
But Jewell insisted he could not have taken the Latics any further.
"I knew I had to get out at the end of the season because I couldn't face another close season spent lining up transfer targets, then being let down at the last minute." Jewell told the Sunday People newspaper.
"The bottom line is that the top players don't want to play for Wigan.
"It's not a big, glamour club with a huge stadium and masses of fans so they just won't come - and, in the end, I'd had enough.
"I want to work with top players but when they won't come to your football club it does your head in."
Jewell, 42, also hit back at claims by Wigan owner Dave Whelan that he quit because he could not handle the strain.
"I couldn't believe what he said," Jewell said.
"There were no pressure problems. My record speaks for itself in pressure situations."
Assistant manager Chris Hutchings was named as Jewell's replacement at the JJB Stadium.
