Paul Jewell has admitted an FA charge of improper conduct for his four-letter outburst at referee Phil Dowd at the end of Wigan's Premiership match against Arsenal earlier this month.

The Latics boss was incensed after Dowd turned down appeals for a second-half penalty at the Emirates Stadium on February 11th before two late goals for the Gunners secured a 2-1 victory.

After the match, Jewell was seen approaching Dowd and launching into a tirade at the match official. In his post-match interview, Jewell also claimed that the performance of the referee could cost his club £50 million if they are relegated at the end of the season.

In accepting the charge however, Jewell has requested a personal hearing at which he is expected to draw attention to Dowd's behaviour in officiating the clash, where he is alleged to have sworn at several Wigan players.

"We, as a club, will be fighting this tooth and nail," Jewell said shortly after the incident.

"We owe it to our supporters to fight this because if I just shrug my shoulders and do nothing when I feel an injustice has been done I would be letting them down.

"I have been overwhelmed with the support I have had from inside the game, big figures who I respect a great deal.

"They have told me in no uncertain terms that I must take this all the way, and that's what I intend to do."

Jewell has received the support of his chairman, Dave Whelan, who said he intends to back his manager.

"The referee used foul and abusive language to our players - that is not acceptable and we should take that up with the league," Whelan said.

"If the players used foul and abusive language to the referee, they would have been sent off."
