Chelsea have claimed the Premier League's decision to change the date of their game against Everton "undermines the sporting integrity of the competition".

The Blues say they are "extremely disappointed" with the change, which means they will be forced to play two matches in the space of 72 hours.

Avram Grant's men will line up against Wigan Athletic on Monday April 14th before they travel to Goodison Park for what could be a crucial showdown with the fifth-placed Toffees on Thursday April 17th.

And in an angry retort at the fixture changes, Chelsea claimed it gives their title rivals Manchester United and Arsenal "an unnecessary competitive advantage at a critical time of the season".

"[Our opponents will have] more recovery time from their previous match and preparation time for their next fixture when we have to play two games during the same period," the statement reads.

"There has been no consideration given to our fans, who will be presented with serious travel, work and other issues.

"And… the decision sets a dangerous precedent in changing match days still further when fixture congestion does not exist and when a sensible solution regarding other television matches that weekend was suggested."

The statement concluded: "Football has benefited greatly from the backing of television and Chelsea as much as anyone else.

"However this decision is one step too far and we reserve all rights on our position."End of story
