Wigan star Emmerson Boyce has been ruled out for several weeks after breaking two ribs in the win over Manchester City.
The defender was injured in a collision with City defender Richard Dunne and limped off 13 minutes from time at the JJB Stadium.
Boyce, 27, is set to miss the Latics' next three games against Fulham, Charlton, and Bolton.
Wigan boss Paul Jewell said the loss of Boyce is a huge blow in their battle to steer clear of the relegation zone.
"It's a shame for him, he has been magnificent this season," Jewell said.
"But he's the sort of lad who will come back at the earliest possible opportunity, I'm confident of that."
Boyce has been ever-present in the centre of Wigan's defence since moving for £1 million from Crystal Palace last summer.
Matt Jackson, Boyce's defensive partner, said the former Luton defender had been a revelation since his arrival.
"He has quietly got on with his job without grabbing headlines but has been doing an absolutely vital job for us at the back," Jackson said.
"He's the sort of player who puts his body on the line time and time again and you could see that on Saturday.
"Even after feeling pain, he carried on until it was absolutely impossible to do anymore. I don't know about being an unsung hero but all the players and the manager certainly appreciate the valuable job he does for the team."
